Museums in Marseille
The year 2013 was the year in which Marseille made a major leap forward in culture and was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture. It was precisely on this occasion that the MUCEM, the Museum of the Civilization of Europe and the Mediterranean was inaugurated.Nothing but the name is quite evocative, the museum focuses mainly on the anthropological heritage of the European and Mediterranean area. Here curators, historians, archaeologists and other professionals of the discipline deal with the preservation, study and presentation of the vestiges of ancient times, but also objects of everyday life related to a given culture and a people .The MUCEM also hosts presentations, seminars, debates, all related to European or Mediterranean civilization. It also hosts temporary exhibitions from time to time in addition to the permanent exhibitions of the museum's collections.Speaking of the collections available to MUCEM, the majority comes from the former National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, which was closed in 2005. Other articles were obtained from the Europe Department of the Palais de Chaillot Man Paris. To all this is added the acquisitions and the donations. In all, the various collections of the MUCEM are made up of 350 000 objects of various size and form.MUCEM receives more than 300,000 visits per year. Among these visitors are French, Italians, Germans, English, Spanish, etc. They all come here to discover their roots and the traditions of their ancestors. There are also those who come simply because the place enjoys a good publicity that has aroused their curiosity. And of course, there were the onlookers who were walking around the Old Port, and when they visited Fort Saint-Jean, they fell on the Mucem and decided to make a small detour. In any case, all those who have already come to the Mucem say they are satisfied with their visit and especially that they have learned a lot. In short, the museum holds all its promises of beautiful discoveries and allows to cultivate oneself in the relaxation or vice versa.
